Update 1/14/22

Parents, coaches, and family members,

The following is our plan for the upcoming youth basketball season. It is important that we respect parents’ ability to have predictable schedules with their children and that we provide clear and simple dates and metrics to be met for the season to move forward. The plan is as follows:

  • Based on recommendations and conversations with Island County Public Health and the South Whidbey Community Center, we are postponing the season two more weeks based on the current sharp increase of reported case counts in Island County. Our hope is that within this period, cases will begin trending downward and at-home tests will be more accessible to the public.
  • On Thursday, January 27th, if case counts are trending downward on the weekly update from Island County Public Health, we will begin practices beginning the week of January 31st.
  • We will not be conducting a skills assessment this year. Instead, we will be in contact with coaches to have teams selected ahead of time and get practice schedules in place. Team & practice information will be communicated to all parents on Friday, January 28th.

If, on Thursday, January 27th, case counts are still increasing, we will cancel the 2022 winter basketball season. It is important that we continue to provide opportunities for kids to have access to basketball, and will make every effort possible to offer basketball skills camps and open gyms throughout the spring, summer, and fall in the year ahead.

We have consulted with Island County Public Health, the South Whidbey Community Center, and other local youth basketball leagues to help determine the following safety protocols that will be put in place. Most of these are the same protocols that are currently being used in the Skagit SWISH league; one of the largest youth basketball leagues in the area.

  • ALL players, coaches, spectators, referees and staff will be required to wear a mask at all times, regardless of vaccination status per state guidelines.
  • Players and coaches will be the only individuals allowed in the gyms during practice times.
  • Coaches are required to provide proof of vaccination.
  • Coaches will pick their practice time slots from the following times available on Mondays-Fridays:
    • 5:30-6:25
    • 6:30-7:25
    • 7:30-8:25
  • We are requiring players and coaches to leave the gym as soon as their practice is finished.
  • Once the previous team has left, the next team can enter the gym for their practice.
  • Doors leading outside will be propped open to help accommodate air circulation.
  • All 3rd/4th Grade teams will practice in the Multipurpose Gym downstairs at the South Whidbey Community Center
  • All 5th/6th Grade teams will practice in the Main Gym upstairs at the South Whidbey Community Center – there may be deviations at times based on availability of this gym
  • On game days, teams (players, coaches, spectators) will not be allowed to enter a gym until the previous game(s) have completed and all previous teams have left the gym (unless one or more team(s) are scheduled for a doubleheader).
  • No food or beverages for spectators allowed (this has always been a rule).
  • No end-of-game handshake will occur.
  • Electronic Whistles will be used by referees in place of a traditional whistle.
  • Only team personnel and players should be in the team bench area.
  • Promptly leave the gym following game(s).

Safety protocols are subject to change at any time and are at the discretion of the South Whidbey Community Center.

We appreciate your patience with us in working to find the safest way for kids to get back on the court without any further interruptions.
