Learn to sail!

BEGINNERS AGES 10-15; INTERMEDIATES AGES 12+, LEVEL 2

Don’t miss out on this amazing opportunity to learn to sail! Sailing is an activity that can be enjoyed for a lifetime. This camp combines shore side learning with lots of hands-on, on-the-water sailing experience, and each student will be assigned their own boat. Students learn boating safety, basic seamanship and knot tying. The focus is on sailing and having fun. A detailed description of the program and your responsibilities can be found at swyachtclub.org/learn-to-sail/

A welcome message will be emailed before the first class with last minute details and any changes.

Intermediates: During weeks 1, 2 of Intermediate Camp, each student will sail single-handed a Laser and emphasis will be on building individual skill and confidence. In week 3, students will sail two-to-a-boat in Lido 14 sailboats and there will be more emphasis on teamwork and communication.

Requirements: Each student must demonstrate the ability to stay afloat for 2 minutes without a life jacket. The Intermediate class is limited to youth ages 12+ who have attained a Level 2 competency at the beginner level, or by permission of the Program Director.

Instructors: These classes are offered in partnership with the South Whidbey Yacht Club. The head instructors are US Sailing certified and will be assisted by experienced dinghy sailors. Sufficient staff will be on hand to ensure each participant receives personal attention. Our priorities are safety, fun and learning.

Location: Beginning Camp students will meet the first day at the Honeymoon Lake Clubhouse for swim assessment and orientation, then that afternoon and the rest of the days will be at Deer Lake.  Returning sailors do not need to be swim assessed again but should attend orientation.  Parents and drivers are encouraged to join us at this orientation.  Intermediate Camp students will meet directly at the Deer Lake County Park.
